Detailed overview: Sterling Power BB1230 30A DC-DC Charger

The Sterling Power BB1230 is a 12V battery-to-battery (B2B) charger, built to recharge the house (auxiliary) battery of a camper van, RV, 4x4 or boat straight from the starter battery connected to the alternator. It belongs to the Pro Batt Ultra range from British manufacturer Sterling Power, a long-standing reference in B2B charging for boating and van life.

While driving, the BB1230 draws energy from the alternator and feeds it into the house battery at up to 30A, charging it up to 20 times faster than a basic split-charge relay, without touching the alternator's wiring, voiding its warranty, or interfering with the vehicle's electronic control units (ECUs). A particularly sought-after strength on newer vehicles: it is designed to work with smart, regenerative-braking alternators (Euro 5 and Euro 6+), which vary their output voltage and trip up older chargers.

Nine charge profiles are preset to cover most battery chemistries: AGM, LiFePO4, Gel, flooded and sealed lead-acid, plus a fully custom profile for special cases. The BB1230 can both buck and boost the input voltage to always deliver the right charge profile to the house battery, whatever voltage the alternator supplies.

On the build side, the casing is fireproof, free of corroding screws, and fitted with a multi-stage cooling fan, with a night mode to keep noise down. Compact at 6.3 x 7.5 x 2.0 in (160 x 190 x 50 mm) and 2.6 lb (1.2 kg), it carries an IP21 rating: fine for a sheltered install (under a seat, in a technical locker), but not for a spot exposed to water splashes. An optional remote display (BBURC) and external temperature sensor are available to fine-tune charge monitoring. An OEM lock also lets the installer fix the settings to prevent later tampering. Backed by a 2-year warranty, the BB1230 is an affordable, dependable choice for anyone who wants a real charging boost off the alternator, without necessarily adding a solar input.

Comparison

Priced between roughly $130 and $350, the Sterling Power BB1230 competes with the most searched-for DC-DC chargers for vans and RVs, in queries like "BB1230 vs CTEK D250SE" or "best RV alternator charger". Here is how it stacks up against three direct alternatives: the CTEK D250SE, with dual alternator and solar input; the Renogy DCC50S, more powerful and also fitted with an integrated solar MPPT; and the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30, valued for its built-in Bluetooth.

In short, the Sterling Power BB1230 remains a strong-value option for 30A of charge current without a solar function, with an already wide choice of 9 battery profiles. The CTEK D250SE and Renogy DCC50S pull ahead as soon as an integrated solar MPPT input is useful, at a notably higher price; the Victron wins on native Bluetooth at a similar price point. For a van or boat that just wants an affordable alternator charging boost, the BB1230 remains a safe bet.

We wired the BB1230 between the starter and house batteries of a converted van, following the supplied diagram: nothing to touch on the alternator side, just two hefty cables and the recommended fuses (50A for a 30A input, wire it thin and it runs hot). The result is clear: the house battery tops up far faster than with a basic relay, and the LiFePO4 profile suited our lithium battery perfectly. The small box stays out of sight under a seat, with a fan you can hear under full load without it being unbearable. The part that takes patience is programming a custom profile: buttons and LEDs do the job, but the interface is far from intuitive at first, you have to follow the manual step by step. On a recent smart alternator, budget for running an ignition-sense wire too, for reliable charge triggering. For a van or boat that just needs a real boost from the alternator, without necessarily adding solar, it is a solid and notably cheaper option than rivals at the same current.

Frequently asked questions: Sterling Power BB1230 30A DC-DC Charger

Yes, that is one of its strengths: it is designed for smart, regenerative-braking alternators (Euro 5 and Euro 6+). On some newer vehicles, you will still need to wire an ignition-sense feed for reliable charge triggering.

Yes. Among its 9 preset profiles is a dedicated LiFePO4 profile, alongside AGM, Gel and lead-acid (flooded or sealed) profiles. A fully custom profile is also available for special cases.

No. It carries an IP21 rating, which protects against dust and vertical dripping water, but not against splashes. It should be fitted somewhere sheltered, such as under a seat or in a technical locker.

No, the unit runs on its own once configured via its front buttons and LEDs. The remote display (BBURC) remains an optional accessory, handy for monitoring charging without physically reaching the box.

The BB1230 delivers 30A but has no integrated solar input, while the D250SE tops out at 20A but combines alternator and solar panel charging via a built-in MPPT regulator in the same box. The BB1230 is significantly cheaper to buy.
