This Green Cell CS03XL matches HP's own part reference, also listed as 800513-001, 800231-141, HSTNN-DB6U and HSTNN-IB6Y: 3400 mAh at 11.4 V, about 39 Wh of Li-polymer, with the expected protection circuits. It covers EliteBook 745, 755, 840, 848 and 850 in G3 form, plus the ZBook 15u G3. Unlike the Inspiron range, the battery here is internal: the base has to come off, a simple job that nonetheless calls for a Torx screwdriver.

The EliteBook 840 G3 is exactly the sort of machine people keep for years: solid chassis, excellent keyboard, still enough performance for office work and the web. Its battery, though, has aged, and that is often the only thing standing in the way of keeping it. This Green Cell fixes precisely that for around thirty pounds, against several hundred for a replacement machine. The flat 39 Wh Li-polymer format is the original one, so you get the starting runtime back, four to six hours depending on use. One important practical difference from the Inspiron range: the battery here is internal. You turn the machine over, remove the Torx screws from the base, disconnect the ribbon cable and swap the pack. Nothing complicated, about fifteen minutes, but it is not a tool-free job. What made us pick this reference over an anonymous pack is the two-year manufacturer warranty and the identified cells: on an internal battery that is hard to inspect, a careful protection circuit matters even more. Do watch the generations, though: the CS03XL targets G3 models, not the CM03XL packs of the G1 and G2.

Replacing a laptop battery is one of the few jobs that genuinely extends a machine's life for a trivial cost, and that is exactly this Green Cell's territory. On a 2015 Inspiron 15 that barely lasted an hour, you get back half a day of office work, enough to push the replacement back by several years. Fitting is done from underneath, the battery being removable on most affected Inspiron models, with no need to open the base. What separates Green Cell from the countless unbranded packs is traceability: identified cells, stated protection circuits, a two-year warranty and a European manufacturer you can actually reach. On a product whose real risk is a cut-price protection board, that is worth the few pounds' difference. Two things to know before ordering. First the capacity: 2200 mAh is the original four-cell format, not a high-capacity pack, so expect no more than the machine had when new. Second the reference: the Inspiron range used several different batteries, so read M5Y1K on the old label before confirming.

At 18 nominal volts it stores 72 watt-hours, enough to run a screwdriver for a good day, a mower over a small lawn, or a 230 V inverter for around twenty minutes at full load. A three-segment LED indicator shows the remaining level at the press of a button, and the internal electronics watch temperature and cell balancing to protect service life.

In-depth reviewRead our full review → 3.8/5 This battery has established itself as a benchmark in its category, and it is easy to see why. The central argument is not technical but economic: as long as you stay with Einhell, one battery does everything. We have watched it move from a drill to a blower and then to a 230 V inverter in the same day, with no adapter and no improvising. On the 4 Ah format specifically, the balance is good. The 2 Ah packs run down too quickly on demanding tools, the 6 Ah ones noticeably weigh down a screwdriver held at arm's length; the 4 Ah sits in between, with 72 watt-hours for a little over six hundred grams. The three-segment LED indicator is basic, but it has the merit of existing and stops you running flat at the wrong moment. Two honest remarks, however. The stated capacity is measured under favourable conditions: on a tool that draws hard, expect closer to ninety per cent of the theoretical figure, which is normal for the sector. And the charger is never supplied with these batteries sold on their own, a detail that catches out hurried buyers: check you already have one, otherwise a starter kit works out cheaper than buying both separately. The TE-ES 18/150/1 is the senior version of Einhell's Power X-Change battery inverter, and the gap with the TC-ES is not about power: both deliver 150 watts through the 230 volt socket. This model adds three things that change how you use it. A 12 volt, 120 watt socket, supplied with its car adapter lead, to run a cool box or a tyre compressor without going through mains voltage.
