After years of faithful service from the Charge 5, we were watching the Charge 6 closely, and JBL delivered. The sound has grown fuller: AI Sound Boost, a real-time signal processing algorithm, draws more from the drivers and you feel more generous bass, a more open presentation at higher volumes. On a day at the beach, the IP68 rating (now protected against prolonged submersion) reassured us, and the removable strap, the real novelty, is a game changer for hanging it on a bag or a branch. The 28-hour battery life is comfortable: you get through a camping weekend with little recharging. The power bank function moves to USB-C, more universal, and the same port also serves as a quality wired audio input. On connectivity, Auracast replaces PartyBoost and broadcasts to a near-unlimited number of compatible speakers. Two reservations: the price creeps up compared with the Charge 5, and there is still no microphone for calls. But as a multi-function portable speaker, the Charge 6 is a fine evolution.

When you bring out the Xtreme 3, you do not go unnoticed, and that is the whole point. With its 100W and four speakers, it puts out full sound and bass that moves air: enough to fill an entire backyard or a table of twenty people without ever straining. We used it a lot outdoors, and its IP67 rating let us set it down by the pool without worry. The supplied shoulder strap, with its built-in bottle opener, is a real plus for carrying it around, even if at nearly 2 kg you feel it on your shoulder. The USB rescue port saved more than one phone at the end of the evening, which clearly places it among multi-function devices. The 15-hour battery life is decent given the power, but at full volume it drops faster. Two honest downsides: it is bulky and heavy, and its price sits at the top of the range. But for anyone after big, long-lasting portable sound, the Xtreme 3 delivers on its promises.

We have a real soft spot for this Olantern Classic 2 Pro, as much for its looks as for what it can do. The retro copper style looks great on a camping table or a shelf at home, and the light is superb: the knob lets you dial in the mood precisely, from warm white for reading to soft orange for an evening. App control is a clever touch, you check the battery level and set a timer without getting up. What places it among multi-function devices is its power bank function: with USB-C and USB-A outputs up to 18W, it recharged our phones during a weekend out in nature, a real plus when you are far from an outlet. Runtime is impressive in eco mode, holding several nights without a recharge. Two honest reservations: it is fairly heavy for a lantern, and its price sits above basic camping lights. But for the quality of light, the style and the dual lighting-battery role, it is well worth a look.

We took the Tronsmart Bang 2 for what it is, a generous party speaker, and it genuinely delivers. The 90W have real punch: the sound carries far outdoors, the BassUp function gives bass that hits, and at up to 105 dB it easily fills a garden or a beach. Battery life is a real strong point: with its 9,000 mAh battery, it lasts a whole evening (and far more at moderate volume) without hunting for a socket. The beat-synced RGB lighting adds a nice touch for the mood, and adjusts in the app, as does the equaliser. What places it among multi-function devices is its power bank function: its USB-C port recharges a phone, handy when the group's batteries run low late in the night. IPX6 waterproof, it fears neither splashes nor rain, and the detachable strap makes it easy to carry. Two honest nuances: at full power with the LEDs on, the runtime naturally drops, and at nearly 3 kg it is not a pocket mini-speaker. But to liven up parties while rescuing phones, the Bang 2 offers an excellent sound-features-price ratio.

We took the Charge 5 everywhere this summer, and that is exactly what it is built for. On a deck or by the pool, the sound really carries: 40W fill a backyard without distorting, with genuinely present bass for a speaker this size. The IP67 rating earned our trust more than once, between a surprise downpour at a campsite and splashes at the lake, it shrugs everything off. Battery life lives up to the claim: on a full day out we never had to recharge it, and 20 hours is realistic at a reasonable volume. The feature that lands it among multi-function devices is the USB-A port that rescues a dead phone, genuinely handy on a hike or at a tailgate. Two honest downsides: there is no aux input and no microphone for calls, and at full volume the battery drains noticeably faster. But for big sound, a rugged build, and real outdoor versatility, the Charge 5 remains a safe bet.

The NWL30 is one of those objects that quickly earn a spot in the car boot or the bivouac bag. On paper, the 3-in-1 smells of gimmick, but in use each function holds up. The 3000-lumen output is genuinely powerful for a light this size, and the stepless color-temperature adjustment, from warm white to cool white, is a real pleasure for switching from a dinner-table mood to true work lighting. The 18,000 mAh battery gives solid runtime and does a real job as a backup power bank, with its USB-C and USB-A outputs. The mosquito-repelling function does the job on summer evenings. We also like the red signaling light and the rugged build. Two reservations: at 515 g it is not ultralight, and its price places it above a simple lantern. But for anyone who wants a single object that lights up, recharges and repels mosquitoes, it is very convincing.

The Lepro lantern puts out 410 lumens across five brightness levels, from a bright main light down to a low glow for reading in a tent. Its 3600 mAh battery lasts up to 24 hours on the lowest setting and about 5 hours at full brightness, and doubles as a power bank to give a phone a partial charge through its USB port. Two magnets in the base stick it to a car body or a metal post, and two folding loops let you hang it upside down from the top of a tent. Its IPX4 rating shrugs off splashes and rain.
We picked up the current Lepro lantern for a few nights of camping, and it still occupies that same handy niche as the model it replaces: not quite a lamp, not quite a battery, more a $27 tool that does both jobs well. Its 410 lumens are plenty for a two-person tent without blinding anyone, and the five brightness levels mean you can dial it down for reading. We ended up using the low setting most nights, since it stretches to about 24 hours, easily two or three evenings between charges. The two magnets in the base are the real trick: stick it to a car door or a metal post and your hands stay free. The folding loops are still there for hanging it from the top of a tent, the most even way to light the inside. Treat the power bank function for what it is: 3600 mAh is roughly half a charge for a modern phone, and output tops out at 5W, so it is slow, more a safety net than a real charger. One honest gripe: charging the lantern itself still relies on a basic USB cable rather than USB-C. For the price, it remains a genuinely useful piece of camping kit.

We loved the Nitecore LR70 for its Swiss-army-knife take on light. The build inspires confidence, IP67 waterproof and impact-resistant, and USB-C charging is handy. Two honest nuances: at full power, the runtime drops fast (Turbo is made for short bursts), and at 271 g it is not the lightest accessory. But for anyone wanting a single device that lights up strongly, illuminates a camp and rescues phones, the LR70 is a versatile success.

The Nokia 300 Charge is an HMD feature phone with a genuine built-in power bank function: its 3700 mAh battery (about 13.7 Wh) can recharge another device over USB-C at up to 10W, via a dedicated button on the side. Launched on 24 August 2026, it is meant for topping up on the go rather than a full recharge. It has not launched in Europe yet: available in the Philippines, an indicative price of around 50 EUR is circulating for Europe, to be confirmed.

The idea is to replace two or three objects in a bag with one, at the cost of a compromise on each function taken separately.
Yes, when it has a USB output, which most portable models do. Expect modest power though, often 5 to 10 watts, and reduced usable capacity: the music takes priority. Count on roughly one smartphone charge, no more.

As a backup, yes. As a main source, no: a panel the size of the casing produces 1 to 2 watts, meaning 30 to 60 hours of full sun to fill 10,000 mAh. Treat it as insurance on a long hike, and charge the pack from the mains before you leave.
