A controller that no longer lasts two hours is not worn out: it is the battery, and it takes about fifteen minutes to change.

Console controllers carry cells of 1,000 to 1,500 mAh under daily use, which lose most of their endurance after two or three years. Replacement is simple on most models, a few screws and a connector, and restores the controller to its original stamina. Some third-party packs claim more capacity than the original: sometimes true, often optimistic, and we report what we observe. On handheld consoles the job is more delicate and involves prising off a shell, but it stays well within reach of a careful home repairer.

After 300 to 500 cycles, so two to three years of heavy use, capacity falls below 70 per cent and runtime collapses. Before concluding, try another cable and another port: a dirty USB connector or a worn cable produces exactly the same symptoms as a tired battery.

Often yes, provided the format and connector are identical. A 2,000 mAh battery replacing an original 1,560 mAh adds around 25 per cent of runtime with no modification. Check the thickness above all: a few millimetres too many will stop the shell closing properly.
