How do you choose rechargeable batteries? Available in several formats (LR6, LR14…), they fall into 2 categories, namely Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). NiMH batteries offer the advantage of being less toxic and having a longer battery life. Also check, when possible, the battery capacity (in mAh), which gives an idea of how long it will last.

The empirical way is to place the battery upright on a flat surface, like a table, then lift it a few centimetres and release it, to see if it bounces or not. Lighter, empty batteries will bounce where full ones will behave differently. However, there is a more scientific way to do this, which we recommend: using a battery tester.

Depending on the type of batteries you have, their charging time will vary. Overall, the more powerful a battery is, the longer it will take to fully recharge. Thus, for 4 standard 1.5-volt batteries, full charging can take up to 6 hours. Or half the time if you only charge 2, for example. Some chargers are faster, but quality batteries will be needed to avoid affecting their lifespan.

Where an AA alkaline battery is 1.5V, a rechargeable AA will be 1.2V. Electronic devices are tolerant at this level, often able to handle voltages of 0.9V. Alkaline batteries discharge in a constant, linear manner, whereas rechargeable cells keep their voltage for several hours before dropping rapidly at the end of discharge. Although different, therefore, 1.5V batteries and 1.2V rechargeable batteries are equivalent in use.
