Detailed overview: Soshine 14500 900mAh battery

The Soshine 14500 900mAh is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery in the 14500 format, a size that matches a standard AA battery exactly (0.55 x 1.97 in / 14 x 50mm). Soshine, a Chinese brand specialized in batteries and flashlight accessories, offers here a cell designed for lithium-compatible devices, a format increasingly sought after by compact flashlight enthusiasts.

The key point to remember before buying: this battery delivers 3.7V nominal (up to 4.2V at full charge), compared with 1.5V for a standard alkaline or NiMH AA battery. Even though it is exactly the same size as an AA, it is absolutely not interchangeable with a standard AA battery without first checking that the target device accepts 3.7 to 4.2V lithium cells. Used in a device designed for 1.5V, it can damage or even destroy the device.

On the specification side, the Soshine 14500 is rated at 900mAh, with a button top positive terminal protected by nickel-plated stainless steel contacts, and a stated lifespan of 1000 charge and discharge cycles. Internal resistance is low (around 48 to 50 mΩ), and it includes protection against short circuits and overcurrent. It should only be charged on a charger designed for lithium-ion cells, never on a standard NiMH battery charger, ideally between 32 °F and 113 °F (0 °C to 45 °C).

This 14500 format mainly targets compact flashlights designed for lithium cells, some cameras and accessory flashes, as well as toys and small gadgets designed for this type of cell. The manufacturer's rated discharge current remains modest for this format, though: it is best to reserve this cell for reasonably low-draw devices rather than very powerful or high-current flashlights.

Sold here as a pack of 4 with a storage case, the Soshine 14500 900mAh is a solid, affordable option for anyone looking for a lithium cell in AA size, provided the usual precautions for bare lithium cells are carefully followed.

We tested this Soshine 14500 in a compact EDC flashlight, and an AA-sized cell running at 3.7V still feels a bit surprising the first time you hold it. Build quality is solid: the button top is clean, the nickel-plated steel contacts feel trustworthy, and the case included with the pack of 4 is handy for storage. In a flashlight with moderate draw, the rated 900mAh capacity holds up well, with a voltage that stays stable for most of the discharge. The real downside: the maximum discharge current looks fine on paper but feels a bit tight under heavy load, as confirmed by independent measurements found online. Not ideal for powering a very high-drain flashlight, then. One more thing to keep in mind, this is a bare cell with no built-in protection circuit: a dedicated charger and careful handling are essential. For reasonable use in a compact flashlight or small lithium device, it remains a solid, affordable choice from a well-known AA-format specialist.

Frequently asked questions: Soshine 14500 900mAh battery

No, never without checking first. Although it is exactly the size of an AA battery (0.55 x 1.97 in / 14x50mm), the Soshine 14500 delivers 3.7V instead of 1.5V. Only use it in a device explicitly compatible with 3.7 to 4.2V lithium cells, or you risk damaging the device.

Both share exactly the same dimensions (0.55 x 1.97 in / 14x50mm), but a standard alkaline or NiMH AA delivers 1.2 to 1.5V, while the 14500 is a lithium-ion cell at 3.7V nominal (4.2V at full charge). This voltage difference means device compatibility must be checked before use.

Only with a charger designed for lithium-ion cells (14500 compatible), never with a NiMH battery charger. Ideally between 32 °F and 113 °F (0 °C to 45 °C), the cell is rated for up to 1000 charge and discharge cycles before it loses significant capacity.

It is a button top battery: its positive terminal forms a small raised button, protected by nickel-plated stainless steel contacts. This shape makes it compatible with most flashlights and devices designed for this format.

This cell suits compact flashlights, some cameras and flashes, as well as toys and gadgets compatible with 3.7V lithium cells. As its discharge current remains modest, it is not recommended for very high-drain devices.
