The Xtorm XR203 won us over on paper: IP65 rating, foldable solar panel, kickstand, flashlight, three outputs including a 20W USB-C. In real use, wired charging keeps its promises: a full USB-C charge takes about 2.5 hours, and the three ports handle several devices at once without a hitch. The build feels reassuring too, with a rubberised shell that shrugs off knocks. The serious catch concerns the very feature that gives the product its name: solar charging. Digging through verified Amazon customer reviews, the same complaint keeps coming back: solar charging is disappointing, sometimes close to useless. The Xiaomi 10000 Lite is pretty much the perfect backup battery for a bag: slim, light (under 200 g) and sold at a ridiculously low price. I adopted it for days in town when I just want to be sure I finish the evening with some charge. It recharges my phone a bit under twice, which fits its 10000 mAh, and the 22.5 W fast charge really makes a difference versus old slow batteries. The three ports are handy when travelling with someone. The USB-C port also recharges it, in about 4.5 hours. Of course, at this price there is no precise display or wireless charging, and the power is meant for phones, not laptops. But to top up day to day without spending much, it is hard to do better.

We adopted this magnetic Zolo for train journeys, and it is a cleverer object than it looks. The magnetism is firm: placed on the back of an iPhone 16, it holds without sliding, even when handling the phone one-handed. The real surprise is the kickstand. Once folded out, it tilts the phone to a comfortable angle, turning a train tray or an airplane armrest into a small viewing station. We used it far more often than expected. On charging, wireless remains what it is, convenient but slow and a little warm over long sessions. That is where the built-in USB-C cable earns its place: plugged in, it climbs to 30W and charges an iPhone far faster, or rescues an iPad. Not having to carry an extra cord is, once again, the kind of detail that counts when traveling. Two caveats: 10,000 mAh is about two phone charges, so it is more a day companion than a weekend reserve, and wireless charging draws more than wired, so do not count on two full charges if you only use it magnetically. For urban and light nomadic use, it is a success.

After years of faithful service from the Charge 5, we were watching the Charge 6 closely, and JBL delivered. The sound has grown fuller: AI Sound Boost, a real-time signal processing algorithm, draws more from the drivers and you feel more generous bass, a more open presentation at higher volumes. On a day at the beach, the IP68 rating (now protected against prolonged submersion) reassured us, and the removable strap, the real novelty, is a game changer for hanging it on a bag or a branch. The 28-hour battery life is comfortable: you get through a camping weekend with little recharging. The power bank function moves to USB-C, more universal, and the same port also serves as a quality wired audio input. On connectivity, Auracast replaces PartyBoost and broadcasts to a near-unlimited number of compatible speakers. Two reservations: the price creeps up compared with the Charge 5, and there is still no microphone for calls. But as a multi-function portable speaker, the Charge 6 is a fine evolution.

Battery life is a real strong point: with its 9,000 mAh battery, it lasts a whole evening (and far more at moderate volume) without hunting for a socket. The beat-synced RGB lighting adds a nice touch for the mood, and adjusts in the app, as does the equaliser. What places it among multi-function devices is its power bank function: its USB-C port recharges a phone, handy when the group's batteries run low late in the night. IPX6 waterproof, it fears neither splashes nor rain, and the detachable strap makes it easy to carry.
