Detailed overview: Nitecore 18650 USB-C battery 3400 mAh
The Nitecore NL1834R belongs to the new generation of "smart" 18650 batteries: alongside 3400 mAh of capacity, it packs a USB-C charging port directly under its protective cap. No more carrying an external charger: a simple USB-C cable, plugged into a computer, a wall adapter or a power bank, is all it takes to recharge it, wherever you are.
In this familiar 18650 format (0.73 in (18.5 mm) diameter, 2.80 in (71 mm) long, 1.76 oz (50 g)), the cell delivers a nominal voltage of 3.6 to 3.7V for a total energy of 12.58 Wh, and supports a continuous discharge of up to 5A, plenty to power demanding flashlights and headlamps. A built-in indicator LED near the USB-C port shows charge status (red while charging, green once full), handy for checking the battery at a glance without removing it from the device.
The Button Top format (raised positive terminal) and the built-in protection circuit (PCB) make it compatible with the many flashlights that require a protected cell, while actively guarding against overcharge, over-discharge and short circuits. A pressure relief valve and a microporous barrier round out the safety features, an important point on such an energy-dense format.
Rated for more than 500 charge and discharge cycles, the NL1834R is aimed at flashlight, headlamp and other 18650-device users who want to simplify their daily routine: no more removing the cell to place it on a dedicated charger, just plug a USB-C cable straight into it. It remains compatible with standard external chargers if you prefer to recharge several cells at once. A safe bet from Nitecore, a brand recognized for the reliability of its cells and built-in electronics.

Our tester's review: Pierre Freysinger
We fitted several flashlights with the NL1834R, and the built-in USB-C port genuinely changes daily use: no more digging through a bag for a dedicated charger, a standard USB-C cable is enough, your phone's will do fine. The clearly visible charge LED avoids any nasty surprises. On runtime, the rated 3400 mAh holds up on a hiking flashlight used several evenings in a row before needing a recharge. One drawback worth noting: charging through the built-in port is slower than a fast desktop charger, which can matter in an emergency. The Button Top format (2.80 in / 71 mm) is also slightly longer than a standard Flat Top 18650, worth checking against your flashlight before buying. For everyday nomadic use, this is clearly our favorite 18650 right now.
Frequently asked questions: Nitecore 18650 USB-C battery 3400 mAh
Yes, it has a built-in USB-C port on the cell itself: a standard USB-C cable, plugged into the wall, a computer or a power bank, is enough to fully recharge it.
With 3400 mAh and 12.58 Wh, it offers runtime comparable to the best non-USB-rechargeable 18650s, enough for several evenings of hiking use before a full recharge.
It uses the protected Button Top format (2.80 in / 71 mm long), slightly longer than a standard 18650. Check that your flashlight accepts this format before buying, as some very tight cell holders may reject it.
Nitecore rates it for more than 500 full charge and discharge cycles, a typical level for a good-quality protected 18650 cell.
