The Xtar Dragon VP4 Plus is the brand's high-end analyzer charger, the one enthusiasts nickname the battery doctor. Beyond standard charging, it combines four independent bays with genuine diagnostic functions, built for demanding flashlight, RC hobby, or camera gear users.
Measurement probes, not just a charger
The VP4 Plus's real distinction lies in its external measurement probes, included with the unit: they measure a cell's voltage and internal resistance outside the charging bays, like a dedicated multimeter. A real capacity test through a charge-discharge-charge cycle rounds out the diagnostics, and up to 64 results stay stored in memory to compare cell condition over time.
REFRESH mode against NiMH memory effect
For NiMH cells used over a long period, REFRESH mode fully discharges the cell and then recharges it automatically, a cycle that eliminates memory effect and can restore capacity to cells that seemed worn out. It's a function rarely offered on chargers in this price segment.
11.1V/3S packs and power bank output
A rare feature in this range: a dedicated connector lets you charge assembled 11.1V/3S packs with 1A balancing current, so each cell in the pack finishes at full charge. The VP4 Plus also turns into a power bank thanks to its USB 5V/2.4A output, which powers a smartphone or tablet directly on mains power, or from inserted cells when unplugged.
One screen per channel pair, a real practical limit
The backlit LCD screen shows voltage, current, capacity, and charge percentage, but only for two channels at a time: a dedicated button switches to the other two bays. Three currents are selectable (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0A), with a 2A maximum reserved for bays CH1 and CH4 versus 1A on CH2 and CH3.
Who the VP4 Plus is for
This charger suits anyone wanting to truly understand the state of their cells before discarding or reusing them: high-end flashlights, RC hobby gear, camera equipment, or assembled battery packs needing balancing. At around $80, it's an investment best reserved for regular use of these diagnostic functions.
For fast charging of large volumes without such deep analysis functions, the Xtar VC8 with eight bays remains better suited. For simpler daily use, the Xtar VC4SL already covers internal resistance at a lower price.
