The Steca PR 2020 IP65 is a PWM solar charge controller developed by the German manufacturer Steca (Kontron/Katek group), part of its professional PR range. Its defining feature is an enclosure rated IP65, specifically designed to work in demanding environments, high salt content, humidity or dust, where a standard controller would degrade quickly.

Technically it shares the same base as the PR range: PWM technology with shunt MOSFET topology, automatic detection of the system voltage (12V or 24V), and up to 20A of charge and load current. With a panel open-circuit voltage capped at 47V, it handles roughly 240W of panels at 12V and 480W at 24V. The heart of the controller is its self-adaptive Steca AtonIC state-of-charge algorithm, which shows the battery's charge percentage on a graphic LCD screen, as both a gauge and a numeric value.

The weatherproof enclosure includes three cable glands for the module, battery and load leads, and houses the electronics behind a screwed, transparent lid. It packs a data logger with energy meter, programmable dusk and night-light functions, and a built-in self-test. On the protection side, it carries the full Steca lineup: overcharge, deep discharge, reverse polarity (module, load, battery), automatic electronic fuse, short circuit, reverse current protection at night, and disconnection on battery overvoltage. The controller is certified for tropical-climate use (DIN IEC 68 part 2-30 standard), and operates from 14 °F to 122 °F (-10 °C to +50 °C).

Its limits: no Bluetooth connectivity or mobile app, a screen less rich than a recent MPPT controller, and a price well above the non-weatherproof PR 2020 for the same 20A rating. But for a marine, agricultural, building-site or any exposed outdoor installation, the IP65 rating genuinely changes the equation against a standard controller.

The Steca PR 2020 IP65 joined a sailboat's solar setup, where humidity and sea spray finish off most standard controllers within a couple of seasons. Its clear weatherproof enclosure lets you see the electronics inside and screws firmly to the bulkhead, with three cable glands for the module, battery and load leads. The LCD screen clearly shows the charge percentage thanks to the AtonIC algorithm, with no technical jargon to decode. The tropical-use certification is reassuring for long-term humid-climate durability. The downsides: no Bluetooth or app, the screen stays basic compared with recent MPPT controllers, and the price runs well above a non-weatherproof PR 2020 for the same 20A rating. But for marine, agricultural or outdoor building-site use, that IP65 rating clearly justifies the price gap over a standard controller that would eventually give up the ghost.
