Detailed overview: Ansmann Powerline 5 Pro charger
The Ansmann Powerline 5 Pro is not a simple charger: it is a complete charging, testing and reconditioning station for NiMH and NiCd batteries. It is aimed at demanding users (photographers, DIYers, heavy battery users) who want not only to recharge, but also to maintain and extend the life of their cells.
Its versatility is remarkable: it accepts AA, AAA, C and D formats in four round slots, plus a dedicated slot for 9V blocks. Each slot is managed independently, letting you charge batteries of different types and states at the same time.
The backlit LCD screen shows each battery's state in real time (voltage, capacity, progress). Four programs are available: standard charge, discharge, capacity test (to measure a cell's real wear) and refresh (discharge/charge cycles to revive batteries that have lost their punch). The charge current is adjustable to spare small cells or speed up large ones.
Protections (overcharge, faulty-battery detection, thermal cut-off) ensure safe use. Pricier than an entry-level charger, it is fully justified for anyone with many cells or who wants to optimise their lifespan. A durable, reassuring investment.

Our tester's review: Christophe Delpuech
For anyone who takes rechargeable batteries seriously, the Powerline 5 Pro is a little gem. We put it to the test with a stock of AA and AAA cells of various ages, and the capacity test function identified those ready for retirement, while the refresh program revived several we thought were dead. Being able to charge D and 9V on the same device is real comfort when you have varied needs. The LCD screen is readable and finally gives concrete figures. Two caveats: it is noticeably pricier and bulkier than a simple charger, and getting to grips with the programs needs a glance at the manual. But to maintain a fleet of cells over time, it is an investment that quickly pays off.
